INAUGURAL SESSION
|
India’s economic growth performance since 1991 received worldwide attention
and many consider Indian economy as the “emerging giant”. However, quite a few
disturbing trends are also observed during this period, such as the widening gap
between the have’s and the have-not’s, large unemployment in the agriculture
sector, and the country has to deal with the co-existence of rotting grain
mountains and mounting hunger mouths. A number of industries heavily depended on
natural resources are planning/implementing huge capacity expansions in their
capacity without concern for, the environment, local population and their
aspirations. Social tensions in various parts arising out of the above are not
uncommon. The seminar “Agriculture & Environmental Concerns – the role of
Education” looks at the role of education in addressing these grave concerns, so
that India can achieve inclusive growth, through greater thrust to agriculture,
strengthening of the human capital base and improved governance, while
addressing environmental concerns.
