AGRICULTURE & ENVIRONMENT
Current scenario and policy options - Challenges ahead for Education
The Green Revolution, apart from placing food
production permanently on a higher growth trajectory, energized the rise
of the economy through forward and backward linkages. However, there are
several factors such as, shrinking farm size, which make it difficult for
the majority of Indian farmers to access new technology and adopt more
efficient forms of production; environmental stress such as the depletion
of soil nutrients and a declining water table; inadequate capital
formation, poor governance of irrigation systems and severe limitations
for efficient procurement, storage and distribution of agriculture
produce.
India is also witnessing increase in tension arising
out of the conflicting interests in industrial and infrastructural
development on one hand, and environmental concerns on the other.
The session will focus on the lesson learnt so far, the
policy initiatives needed and the role of education to achieve the same.
